Is it me? Is it the book? I really can’t answer that. Here’s what I can answer:
Did I fall asleep listening to the audiobook every. single. time. I tried to listen to it? Yes. 😴
Did I actually Google: Is the narrator an AI-generated voice? Yes, I did. It isn’t, for the record. It’s not that Juliet Rylance did a poor job - it’s just that her voice sounded almost emotionless.
Even just reading on my Kindle, did anything in the opening couple chapters draw me in and make me want to keep reading? Sadly, no.
This seems like a plot that would play better on the screen so far. A teenage daughter gets kidnapped by a person or people who demand the mom not contact law enforcement or they’ll kill the daughter. (If I had a dollar for every story or movie that started this way …. 💵)
Mom ignores her husband’s wishes to contact the cops and goes off to meet the kidnappers at an appointed time. They don't want a ransom - they want her to do some sketchy "job" in Mexico to get her daughter back. Sounds like a brilliant plan that’s sure to go well.
I should be on the edge of my seat, but instead I can’t keep my eyes open, so I’ll have to let others tell me what I missed. Many seem to like it much more. Right now I need the book form of caffeine!
